Over the counter (otc) hearing device faqS

  • What are Over The Counter (OTC) hearing devices?

OTCs are hearing devices for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss who may not need hearing assistance in every situation. They are available from a variety of retailers and do not require a visit to an audiologist to purchase, unlike traditional prescription hearing aids.

  • What are the differences between OTCs and traditional hearing aids?

OTC and prescription hearing aids share a number of same features including Bluetooth connection and adjustable settings but the customization of settings and variety of functions can vary greatly. Traditional hearing aids are more expense but will be adjusted or “programmed” by an audiologist to ensure you are receiving the best sound quality in a variety of settings. They also typically come with longer device and service warranties.

OTCs are a more affordable option for those with qualifying levels of hearing loss but typically have fewer customization options. Adjustments to OTC settings are made by the patient - they will not be programmed by the audiologist - and repairs or troubleshooting will be done directly with the manufacturer.

  • Why should I see an audiologist before getting an OTC hearing device?

It is difficult to accurately determine your level of hearing loss without a diagnostic hearing test. An audiologist can help you determine which type of hearing device is appropriate for your degree and type of hearing loss or if you need a consultation with an ENT specialist.
