Hearing Aid Billing FAQs
Who provides hearing aids through Iowa Ear Technology?
Iowa Ear Technology specializes in dispensing hearing aids for adult patients. Our goal is to provide individualized care and high-quality hearing solutions that fit each patient’s unique lifestyle and listening needs. Our audiologists and hearing care professionals work closely with you to select and program hearing aids using advanced technology designed to improve hearing comfort and communication in daily life.
Do you accept insurance for hearing aids?
Hearing aids dispensed through Iowa Ear Technology are private pay only. This means payment for hearing aids and related fitting or follow-up services is made directly by the patient.
We are not contracted with any insurance company, and hearing aid purchases cannot be billed to or reimbursed through insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.
Our team is happy to provide a detailed receipt or “superbill” if you would like to submit documentation to your insurance provider to inquire about possible out-of-network reimbursement. However, reimbursement is not guaranteed.
Can my hearing test or audiogram be billed to insurance?
Yes. While hearing aids themselves are private pay, audiograms and other diagnostic hearing tests may be billed to your insurance through our affiliated clinic, Iowa Ear Center.
If you are a new patient or need an updated hearing test before being fitted for hearing aids, these diagnostic services are performed at Iowa Ear Center. Our staff can assist with verifying whether your insurance covers this portion of your care.
What if I have traditional Medicare?
If you have traditional Medicare, please be aware that Medicare requires a hearing test order (referral) from your primary care provider (PCP) before they will cover a diagnostic hearing evaluation.
We recommend contacting your PCP in advance to request this referral. Having the order on file ensures your hearing test can be billed to Medicare appropriately.
It’s important to note that Medicare does not cover hearing aids or hearing aid-related services, even if they cover the diagnostic test.
Do you work with any third-party hearing care programs?
Yes. In addition to our private pay services, Iowa Ear Technology partners with two third-party managed hearing care companies:
UnitedHealthcare Hearing
TruHearing
If you believe your insurance plan includes benefits through one of these programs, please contact your insurance company directly to confirm your eligibility and request a referral before scheduling. Once your referral is received, our office can coordinate with the program to guide you through the hearing aid selection and fitting process according to your specific benefit plan.
